Jeff Weber

2012 Distinguished Service Award

Presentation remarks as read by Dennis O'Hern

Jeff has been a teacher for 23 years, 18 in Special Education, 10 of which have been at BOHS.  For nearly 20 years, Jeff has been married to wife Janice.  They have a very talented daughter, Kelsey, who studies Architecture at the University of Notre Dame and a son, Austin, who is a Junior at BOHS.

Other than his decision to marry his lovely bride, perhaps his best decision was in 2007 when he started the Life Skills Program at BOHS for students with moderate to severe cognitive disabilities such as autism, Down syndrome, and other intellectual disabilities.  The focus of the Life Skills Program is on functional academics with emphasis on independent living and employment skills.  These students also take at least ne general education class.

In the first year of the program, there were four students.  There are currently seventeen students who, with love and extra special help from the school's Best Buddies, are completely integrated within the general student population and fully participating in all school functions and events.

An important ingredient of the Life Skills Program is community based instruction.  Each week, Jeff and the Best Buddies take his students out into the community for OCTA travel training, shopping at Ralphs or Target, trips to museums and educational programs, and visits to local businesses where these students will be future customers and/or employees.

Because of Jeff's Life Skills Program, students receive outstanding academics at school, quality social interaction with their typical peers and members of the community, and practical application of what they have learned out in society at large.

Jeff and his students do all of their own fund raising in order to obtain curriculum materials, technology devices, and transportation services for heir Community Based Instruction.

For all of his fine work and contributions to the City of Brea, lat January Jeff was named Citizen of the Year by the Brea Chamber of Commerce and, without knowing it, Jeff is nurturing future members of the Aktion Club that the soon-to-be chartered Kiwanis Club of Placentia hopes to sart.  So, for all of the things that you do and have done, the Kiwanis Club of Brea is very proud to present this Distinguished Service Award to you.
